AirAsia X ordered 10 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft furthering its goal of becoming the first long-haul and short-haul low cost airline, announced AirAsia and Airbus at the Paris Air Show today.

Totaling to a list price of US$2.2 billion with the option of 5 more A350 planes, the aircraft will be configured to have 425 seats and a two class layout.

The carrier plans to use the planes to reduce operational costs for long-haul flights to Europe and North America and adding the possibility of flying to more destinations and opening new tourism markets.

“By buying the Airbus A350, AirAsia and AirAsia X have now got its strategy fixed all the way to 2020” said AirAsia Group CEO Dato’ Sri Tony Fernandes in a statement.

“The vision of creating the world’s first long-haul and short-haul low cost airline is complete and we are all very excited.”

Deliveries for the A350s are scheduled between 2016 and 2018 whilst AirAsia X’s previous order of 25 A330s scheduled for delivery through 2015 with two A330s already delivered.

The long-range wide-body A350 is powered by two new generation Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines and burn 25 percent less fuel compared to the older A350 model.
